Yogyakarta Travel Guide

Pura Pakualaman

Yogyakarta Travel Guide covers the city that is considered by many to be the cultural heart of Indonesia. Close to Yogyakarta are the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. The Javanese performing arts of traditional dance, the puppet play and the gamelan orchestra have evolved over the centuries at the palaces of Yogyakarta and nearby Surakarta.

Especially formative were the years of Dutch intervention when the traditional rulers were deprived of absolute power and so had more time to cultivate and develop the performing arts and batik design.

Also known as Jogja, this city is a magnet for tourists, Westerners and Indonesians alike. They are attracted by the Arts, the architecture, batik, silver and the temples at Borobudur and Prambanan.

Jogja is very much a student town, and this includes many Westerners who study gamelan, batik, traditional dance and the Indonesian language. There is a lot to do in and around Jogja, including trips to the various temples, Parangtritis Beach and the Dieng Plateau. Food and accommodation is cheap, so it’s a good place to stay for a week or two.

The Division of Central Java

In 1754, after several years of internal palace rivalries, Central Java was formally divided, with Prince Mangkubumi being given the title of Sultan Mataram. Prince Mangkubumi was allowed to establish a separate sultanate based at Yogyakarta, 100 km south of Surakarta. Surakarta was still ruled by Susuhunan Pakubuwono III, a nephew of Prince Mangkubumi.
In 1757, Prince Mangkubumi received the title of Hamengkubuwono I. The lineage of the current ruler of Yogja dates back to this time.
Construction of the Jogja Kraton started in 1755, and was completed in 1756. The Taman Sari Water Castle was built between 1755 and 1792 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I and II, on an existing spring.
The Jogja Kraton is better known than the Surakarta Kraton these days, because during the struggle for Indonesian Independence in 1949, the Sultan of Jogja sided with and aided the rebels, so was allowed to keep his kingdom, which later became the Yogyakarta Special Administrative Area, whereas the Surakarta Kraton had most of the land and other possessions nationalised, with the exception of the area bounded by the walls of Surakarta Kraton.

HOTELS in YOGYAKARTA

Mid-range places to stay are found near the Jalan Malioboro shopping area, along Jalan Sastrowijayan and Jalan Dagen, and also around Jalan Prawirotaman which is south of the kraton palace.

The Jalan Prawirotaman area has wider streets, fewer street sellers and touts, better food and travel agents. Lots of places to stay that cater to different budgets. The visitors vary from backpackers to families

A few km out of town towards Solo are the upmarket Ambarrukmo and Sahid Garden Hotels.

Budget travellers and back-packers tend to congregate around the Pasar Kembang / Jalan Malioboro area , especially on Jalan Sastrowijayan, Jalan Dagen and Gang (Lane) Sastrowijayan 2 that runs between Jalan Sastrowijayan and Jalan Pasar Kembang.

However, the Jalan Sastrowijayan area is getting a bit run-down and noisy. Most of the tourists in the area now are locals, so the area is now reverting to the way it was in the 1970’s when the first backpackers arrived and put Jogja on the hippie trail between England and Australia – a cheap place to stay near the railway station.
